Geek culture is practiced by people interested in science fiction / fantasy movies and video games. Aside from video games, many geeks also play Dungeons & Dragons and World of Warcraft.

Modern times has seen an emergence of geek culture in our society. We have seen reboots of major science fiction movies such as Planet of the Apes and Star Trek.

“Many Sci-fi films are intrinsic in our culture because science fiction uses its story to explain how humans mistreat people from different backgrounds many stories show how society encompasses prejudice,” Erik Jimenez (FIU film critic).

“Movies like Frankenstein encompass the idea on how humans should not play God and we learn how the villagers treat Frankenstein by as looking away at his monstrous appearance”, he said.

Other stories such as Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia could be symbolic of Christianity. Aslan’s death in Narnia could resemble the sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

According to BBC iWonder, the hobbits in Lord of the Rings could represent the common English people that were at risk of being bombed by the Germans during World War II.

According to Lateral Magazine, many comic book heroes have helped Americans deal with the fears of World War II. Captain America was a figure of American patriotism in the 1940’s. Today Captain America’s image deals more with the war on terror and government oversight.

Geek culture helps people be more self -confident and form a bond with fictional characters. Having a bond with fictional characters inspires people to pursue those careers.

“We see that many scientists were inspired to join NASA because of their fascination with Star Trek”. –he said

Steven Universe has created a character called Padparadshcha who is implied to be within the autism spectrum disorders (ASD) because she encompasses various developmental delays such as vision and sense of time.

Geek culture has helped special needs children with autism, dyslexia, etc have representation in our media. The autism spectrum disorder is slowly being featured in popular sci-fi/fantasy movies.

“Today is the best time to be a “geek” the status has risen with popular well-written movies and TV shows that have impacted our society with regards to various fans on college campuses”. -he said

The geeks shall inherit the Earth.
